Result of 1st Round Screening

Expecting new types of airport ideas with innovation and originality. Some works are conscious of digital twins.

On July 12th, the 1st round screening for the 12th VDWC was held, and the juries selected the 31 entry teams from among the many applications from Japan and other Asian countries. The entry teams are supposed to create and submit works, and the final judging and award ceremony will be held at the Design Festival 2022-3Days in November after the advance nomination judging.

Applicants should successfully incorporate the lifestyle changed by COVID-19 into their work. They should also consider not only design but also simulation, which is a feature of this contest.

In addition, since Sydney is located far from other major cities in the world, we are looking forward to ideas on how to devise remote communication there, and ideas for a new type of airport that is not conventional but innovative and original.

▲The 1st round screening was held on July 12th.

Theme2022
A city where humans and smart mobility coexist - Western Sydney Airport Terminal Neighborhood

Sydney is not only the largest city in Australia, but also one of the world's leading tourist cities in the southern hemisphere. Construction of Sydney's new airport has begun at Badgerys Creek, Sydney, New South Wales, 50km west of Sydney, and is scheduled to open in December 2026. Unlike the current Sydney Airport, which has restrictions on takeoffs and landings, this 24-hour airport is expected to become Australia's largest passenger airport in the future, and in conjunction with the construction of this airport, the surrounding area, which is currently empty, is the site of a project called the Aerotropolis, one of the largest urban development projects in Australia.

VDWC would like to see a proposal that envisions a future commercial and business district adjacent to the West Sydney Airport Terminal. The design of the terminal was selected in a competition by Zaha Hadid and Cox Architect. The Sydney West Metro Line, which will connect Sydney's central business district with the new international airport, has been planned, but on the other hand, a large amount of automobile traffic is expected to concentrate in the vicinity of the airport, not only from passengers, but also from people engaged in airport-related work, import and export, and people staying temporarily in hotels. In addition, in order to move around a vast area on a human scale, new and small, low-speed, automated traffic that can run not only on roads but also inside buildings, unlike conventional cars and trains, will be used, and robots and drones will also intersect to create a city of advanced mobility. Naturally, this is a very appropriate place to consider a model of a smart mobility city where everything from airplanes, trains, cars, automated transportation, and robots all works together in harmony with humans.

Smart mobility means collecting real-time traffic information to streamline operations, and what is required here is the construction of a cyber-physical system that can constantly sense the dynamism of various urban transportation systems and provide feedback for optimal control. Of course, this requires not only convenience of transportation, but also reduction of energy consumption for a low-carbon society, enjoyment of human life, and coexistence with the environment. We would like to see a proposal that shows the system in a simulation from the perspective of designing a smart mobility city of the future, with the aforementioned factors.
