▲Awards Ceremony
(Nov. 9th 2023 at Shinagawa Intercity Hall)

  • The 13th World cup Award

Entry No.26 Komorebi Studio, Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand)

    Floating Furusato
    • Ena City boasts an innovative multimodal transportation system that seamlessly integrates an aerial cable car and river ferry network, preserving its unique landscape. This system efficiently connects key city points, including stations, the picturesque slopes of Ena Gorge, and Enakyo Wonderland, while minimizing environmental disruption. The stations maintain Ena's rich architectural heritage, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings. What sets this system apart is the remarkable feature of its cable cars: they can transform into ferries, providing passengers with the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views of Ena City from both the air and water. Autonomous driving technology ensures safety and enhances the immersive experience.

  • Excellence Award

Entry No.18 Minstrel Troupe, National University of Kaohsiung (Taiwan)

    DOKODEMO
    • Taking inspiration from the concept of "Dokodemo," resembling a magical door to anywhere, we've combined the main station with underground virtual corridors, allowing people to effortlessly travel between various stations using Units-Petal. Additionally, we've incorporated the Japanese Lily, the city flower of Ena, as the prototype for our Lakeside Station. This station exudes the charm of Japanese Lilies, with Units-Petal gracefully gliding over the water, reminiscent of pollen drifting in the wind. This design enables our Units-Petal to roam every corner of Ena City, allowing visitors to experience a variety of rural landscapes and cultural characteristics.

  • Honorable Judge Award Architectural Informatics Award (Prof. Yasushi Ikeda)

Entry No.20 Interstellar Roamers, National University of Kaohsiung (Taiwan)

    THE MILKY WAY
    • The design concept revolves around leveraging the speed fluctuations inspired by celestial bodies' motion. It creates a slower-paced exploration of Ena while incorporating the cultural symbol of the "oil paper umbrella" to establish a unique transportation system specific to the city. With mutative operational modes available day and night, individuals can fully immerse themselves in Ena's natural beauty and vibrant local culture, making for a rich and unforgettable experience.

  • Honorable Judge Award Nostalgia Award (Prof. Kostas Terzidis)

Entry No.31 DREAM TEAM, VNU University of Engineering and Technology (Vietnam)

    THE MEMORIAL SAKURA CITY
    • The rapid development of technology makes us always pursue new things but forget the traditional things that have accompanied each person's childhood memories. Preserving and honoring the beauty of Japanese tradition in the project, taking cherry blossoms as the highlight of the project, we integrate modern technology into objects, architecture, etc. while preserving the traditional landscape of the city. Every Japanese person coming here will feel the familiar feeling of a traditional space combined with the conveniences that modern technology brings, which will be a special experience that is difficult to describe in words. Every visitor coming here will experience a quintessentially Japanese space.

  • Honorable Judge Award Future Vision Award (Prof. C. DAVID TSENG)

Entry No.49 MT Square / MT2, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) (China)

    JINDAI
    • "JINDAI" will be the blueprint for the future lifestyle of Ena City. The mountain and river topography of the area evokes Japanese nostalgia. To strike a balance between artificial intelligence technology and historical and natural features, we drew inspiration from the Ena city terrain, where the waves of the original landscape connect the innovative conceptual system and reverse the fluidity of Ena city. Taking the "wave visualization" of JINDAI as the central concept, and referring to older Japanese culture, the city will grow and expand vertically with more diversity.

  • Honorable Judge Award Reversible Award (Assoc. Prof. Takehiko Nagakura)

Entry No.10 BIG BANG, VNU University of Engineering and Technology (Vietnam)

    The Circle City
    • The Circle City is a future city planned in a closed circle with people's housing along with a service and traffic network arranged to become more convenient and faster than ever. Although it is a city of the future, it does not lose the inherent natural beauty of Ena province. With the idea of bringing a neat or orderly city to increase environmental protection, in addition, the design brings a healthier, more suitable life to help improve the quality of life. Regarding the trapezoid train, it is proactive in moving into the city without having to wait for each trip like the old train. SQUIZ with its smart flying ability will take you wherever you want. In particular, with HHH (Hand Holding Holographic) technology, with just one touch you can control all technology in the city.

  • Nomination Award

Entry No.13 Future Team, Xiamen Institute of Technology (China)

    Air City
    • Under the background of the long history of Ena County in Japan, without changing the original characteristic historical blocks and beautiful Natural landscape, this design study considers the development direction of Ena City in the future, how to apply new technology and technology to urban design, improve and enhance the life and traffic of the city, preserve the original appearance of the city, maintain the original pace of life and living habits, and promote the tourism of Ena, Let more people know and experience Ena's lifestyle: a future city with a strong sense of locality, which uses new energy and new technology to interweave the old and the new.

  • Nomination Award

Entry No.39 Massan, Nihon University (Japan)

The Millennium Trip of Ena with ehho
    • Two members of the team used Shade3D to create a new mobility modeled after a palanquin. The team considered the pattern and size of the palanquin and came up with a shape that reminds us of Japanese traditions and the past. The other two used UC-win/Road to download ehho. The composition and scenario were then examined. Since this was the first time UC-win/Road was used, the design was changed significantly from what was originally planned. However, we examined the camera work and explanation method to make the most of that software provided. We were able to create a work with a strong impact.

  • Nomination Award

Entry No.52 RE-EARTH, Hanoi Architectural University/University of Transport and Communications (Vietnam)

ECOMOTE Ena City Virtual Sustainability: Crafting a Modern and Eco-Friendly Metaverse
    • The City's name is indpired by these three elements, embodying strength and stability like a three-legged stool. Our vision combines urban modernization with the preservation of Ena's tradition identify. By hardnessing virtual technology (Metaverse) and promoting green energy, wwe are building a sustainable city that also advances transportation, including autonomous vehicles. This approach enables a meaningful life for the elderly and modern living for the youth, while boosting tourism. Ecomota city embodies three core principles: Eco-Friendliness, Modernity, and Technology. Alongside this, the Meta-City beside the river retains Gifu's tranquil traditions and original vegetation.

Two Major Reversals Brought to Japan's Original Landscape -The Future of Mobility and Lifestyle in Ena City

Frankly speaking, Ena City in Gifu Prefecture is not a very famous place even within Japan. It may have some historical and natural features, but they are not as vivid as those found elsewhere in Japan. However, it may truly be the original landscape of the Japanese people because it is a common, rural landscape that can be found anywhere rather than a special tourist attraction. In Ena City, the song "Furusato (which means ‘Hometown’ in Japanese)" plays over the street speakers every evening at 5:00 pm. Almost all Japanese people know this children's song that makes them nostalgic for the rural landscape they ran around in back in their childhood days. Just like the lyrics of the song, the mountains and rivers of Ena, surrounded by mountain ranges and gently undulating terrain, are one of the places that makes every Japanese person feel nostalgic and a sense of familiarity.

2 great opportunities for reversal are about to be brought to such an ordinary Japanese mountain village. This year's VDWC will once again return its focus to Japan, the host country, and invite young people from around the world to consider the future brought about by the cooperation between Japan's original landscape and social development, and to address the global issue that focus on the relationship between technological innovation and the happiness of the human spirit.

The first major reversal is the Gifu Prefecture Station (tentative name) along the Maglev Chuo Shinkansen route currently under construction.
The second major reversal is the birth of new mobility through automated driving.

▲Panoramic view of Ena city

  • ▲The area around Mino Sakamoto Station where "Gifu Station" of Maglev Chuo Shinkansen is being constructed nearby

  • ▲Iwamura Castle Town, a town that retains the look of the past

[Overview of town development plans in the area around Gifu Station and in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture]
To the north of JR Mino Sakamoto Station in Nakatsugawa City, next to Ena City, a large station plaza will be built, behind which the Gifu Station (provisional name) of the Maglev Chuo Shinkansen Line will open. According to the construction plan, the station square will include a building and car park between the two stations, facilities to bring the city to life, and a water park where visitors can experience Gifu, the land of clear streams.
As part of its urban development infrastructure arrangement plan, Ena City is promoting strategic road development that will lead to the attraction of businesses and the development of residential areas thanks to the Maglev Shinkansen, as well as infrastructure improvement to mitigate the impact on areas divided by the Maglev, maintain a good living environment and solve urban and regional issues.
On the other hand, Ena City has a rural landscape surrounded by gently undulating mountains, which can be described as the original landscape of Japan, and the beautiful terraced rice fields in the Tomida area have been hailed as the best rural landscape in Japan. In Iwamura Castle Town, the old townscape has been preserved as it was in the past.
